Not so long ago, in 2019, I wrote here about the first green terawatt, the result of many years of research, development, and deployment. The First Green Terawatt Was the Hardest. Now, out of something like 25 TWh that we use, we can look ahead to a terawatt a year and more just of solar. Then, of course, we have to provide for growth in renewable electricity generation in developing countries. Soon enough will come yet another tipping point, when new generating capacity will outstrip growth in demand.
Global solar installations could reach 1 terawatt next year
BloombergNEF reports that the world installed nearly 600 gigawatts of solar power in 2024, closely aligning with projections that annual global solar installations will surpass 1 terawatt within the next few years. Although projections for 2025 currently fall short of that pace, early forecasts often underestimate actual deployment.
Now add in wind, hydro, geothermal and all the rest.
